Masaki Hamura

Fellow, Future of Cities

Masaki Hamura, based in BCG’s Tokyo office and a Partner and Director, was named a Fellow in 2024.

Masaki’s research focuses on the future of the city, in particular, the impact of societal demands like climate change and sustainability, and new technologies such as the metaverse and generative AI, on urban forms.

During his nearly 30-year career, Masaki has gained extensive experience in both the business and academic realms. In the digital industry, he has held key leadership roles, including executive officer of corporate business strategy at LINE, head of brand strategy for East Asia at Twitter, and head of strategy and sales operations for Japan at Google.

Masaki was also the dean and a professor at the Institute of Future City Studies at Tokyo City University, leading research on smart cities and the digital transformation of local governments. He continues to teach as a special professor in the faculty of design and data science, focusing on innovation platforms and social system design.

Masaki is active in urban development, serving on committees like the G20 Smart City Alliance and speaking at major Japanese industry events such as the Innovative City Forum and Japan Innovation Day.

Outside of work, Masaki is a triathlete who runs more than 100 km every month, and enjoys longboard surfing with his son each summer on the beach in Chiba, Japan.
